Spend the weekend learning to make puppets for parades, protests and theater with local artist Susan Simensky Bietila. We’ll use cardboard, staples, glue and paint to create animals or figures that send a message and tell a story. In this art build style workshop, you’ll describe your ideas and work with the group to figure out how to design and build them, with pointers from experienced artists. Come with a creative idea, or collaborate with friends to build your vision. Lunch will be provided, Masks required when not eating. Great for kids 12 and up with an adult present.
Susan Simensky Bietila has been an activist artist since the mid-1960s. Her media include printmaking, drawing, documentary and art photography, murals, and installations. She has collaborated in street theater, making innumerable props, puppets and banners during the past half-century.
Nora is an artist and community organizer living in Milwaukee, WI. She has planned and supported art builds for protests in Colorado and DC and is invested in more people having the skills to make social movements beautiful. She works for Resource Generation, where she organizes young people with access to wealth to participate in the redistribution of land, wealth and power.
